Life in the 21
st
century.
Health and medical advances
4.
Life in the 21
st
century.
Health and medical advances.
Good morning, we are glad to see you all here in our nice hall. Today our meeting is devoted to
questions that worry all of us. What will the life be in the 21
st
century? Will it be possible to
prolong human life? What health and medical advances will help us to do it? Does our
health depend only on medical researches or we are able to be healthy without it? What
should be do to be healthy?
As I know, all of you have read a lot about last medical researches and achievements. So, today
we’ll try to find answers to all these questions. Please share your opinions. We invite all our
guests to participate.
And the first question is – What medical and health advances have you read about? What
impressed you most? (Probable answers – cloning? Genetic engineering? Modified plants and
animals? Long life? Healthy way of life (smoking, alcohol)? Inserting computer chips.(Write
them on the blackboard)
To start with, I’d like you to listen to a short interview with Dr. Cartright.
The first thing I’d like to tell that our knowledge of the human genome will radically change
medicine in the next thirty years. There’s no doubt that it will help us cure all sorts of illnesses,
from heart disease to cancer. I’m fairly optimistic about that…
Without going into too many technical details, we have already identified a lot of genes that
cause diseases. And this is very important, because if we can manipulate a person’s genes before
he or she is born, we could eliminate the possibility of that person ever getting diseases like
certain kinds of cancer and heart disease have important hereditary components…
What do you think about it? (pupils’ answers)
As for me I think it’s necessary to develop in order to prevent hereditary illnesses.
And the next very controversionaal question is cloning. All of you have heard about sheep
Dolly which was cloned with the help of genetic engineering. What do you know about it?
Cloning is used to make exact copies of living plants and animals. As you know it was in science
fiction for years.
Is cloning necessary for treating diseases?
Do you want to have a clone of yourself (yes/no)?
Speaking about cloning I think it will be acceptable to mention one more thing – using
computer chips in order to increase brain power. You’ve heard about it, you saw it in films.
What is your attitude to computer brains?
Would you like to insert a computer chip to become really clever and why?
If you had a chance to insert such thing in your brain to improve 2 of your personal qualities,
what qualitie would you choose? Is it possible to improve them without scientific help?
What perspectives will be opened before you?
We discussed predictions of human abilities, but the question is : Should we modify plants
and animals?
What’s the reason of that?
Are modified fruit and vegetables really healthy?
Where can it be used?
Will you personally eat such food?
All things considered, can we speak about long life of future generations. Will all these
medical researches help people to live longer?
Would you like to live longer?
What can make your life longer (special food, Exercises…)?
Do you really try to save your life and make it longer?
Speaking about healthy way we should mention one serious problem that our society faces
our days – smoking. It is really a problem.
What do you think about it? Is it good/bad for you and your friends?
Why do so many young people smoke nowadays? Do you have friends who smoke?
If yes, have you ever tried to stop them?
Should smoking be banned?
Are there any other ways to reduce the amount of smokers?
It’s time to sum up our “ hot” discussion. We are for the development of our medicine, but
we should develop ourselves. On the one hand it’s necessary to use medical, scientific
achievements.
On the other hand – sport, healthy food, no smoking, no alcohol. Healthy way of life – our
choice!!!
